About

After nearly a decade of trying to farm something on our Edisto Island farm, we finally accepted that we just didn’t have green thumbs. That was, until we had blue thumbs!

We first started growing indigo in 2020 in partnership with Chi Design Indigo. We discovered Indigo Suffructicosa grew perfectly in the harsh South Carolina sun. The deer didn’t eat it. It could handle the loamy, muddy coastal soil and salty air. It was mostly low maintenance — we could weed & water on the weekends. We watched the first seedlings grow into tall, bushy rows and knew we were on to something!

It took one afternoon of learning to process the leaves dyeing our first t-shirts. We immediately fell in love with all the shades of blue, the unique patterns, and the endless creativity that comes from a few indigo leaves. Scarfs, dish towels, dresses, t-shirts, bath robes — suddenly, everything in our house has turned blue.

We want to share the fun of growing & creating indigo dye, so we certified our seeds with the South Carolina Department of Agriculture to be able to sell them!

If you start growing indigo, we’d love to see your plants and your designs! Reach out to us on Instagram or at riversidebluesco@gmail.com!
